Teaching Assistant Full (TA-F)
The Teaching Assistant-Full (TA-F) Certification allows an instructor to teach teens and adults in the classroom under the supervision of a DET and in the laboratory or in-car. These instructors are highly sought by private driving school directors. Texas teacher certification is NOT required.
All course work must be completed within 2 to 4 months.
Documentation of the following is required before beginning Phase 1:
- - Clean driving record
- - No felony convictions
- - High School Diploma or equivalent
Phase 1
45 Hours, Equivalent to 3 college credit hours
18 hours – Direct classroom instruction from a certified instructor.
11 hours – Independent study on specified topics to be completed outside of the classroom.
16 hours – 8 (2 hour) sessions observing in a classroom to become familiar with the curriculum of driver education.
Phase 2
45 Hours, Equivalent to 3 college credit hours
8 hours – Direct classroom instruction from a certified instructor.
14 hours – Observation of certified instructor in a car.
12 hours – Teaching in a car with a certified instructor who is observing and critiquing the trainee.
4 hours – Discussing problems and modeling procedures in needed areas.
7 hours - Independent study on specified topics.
Phase 3
45 Hours, Equivalent to 3 college credit hours
6 hours – Discussion of the trainee’s classroom instruction and the paperwork required
32 hours - 16 (2 hour) sessions of student teaching in the classroom with a certified instructor who is observing and critiquing
7 hours – During which a TA-F or DET discusses problems and helps the trainee teach in weak areas

Phase 1:
- Friday, April 20, 2012: 5:00 pm – 9:30 pm
- Saturday, April 21, 2012: 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm
- Sunday, April 22, 2012: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm
Phase 2:
- Friday, April 27, 2012: 5:00 pm – 9:30 pm
- Saturday, April 28, 2012: 1:00 pm – 6:30 pm
(Phase 3 is optional.)
Phase 3:
- Sunday, April 29, 2012: 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Tuition
When all training is completed at Colony Driving School.
- Payment must be made NO LATER THAN April 17, 2012 (so that we can establish the number of workbooks need for this course)
- Phase 1 and 2, $800.00; Phase 1 and Phase 2 MUST be paid in full at the time of registration. Payment of less than $800.00 will NOT be accepted.
Tuition includes classroom and in-car requirements. - Phase 3 - if payment for Phase 3 is made at the time of registration for Phases 1 and 2, the cost is $400.00 (thus, the total tuition payment at registration will be $1,200.00).

If any of the practical training is completed at another driving school in the Houston, Harrris County, or Fort Bend County area, there will be a surcharge of $75.00 for each phase completed at such other school. Approval for such practical training must be obtained from Mr. Dickinson.
